New computing paradigms such as ubiquitous computing, pervasive computing, and context-aware computing all emphasize building intelligence on the environment including infrastructure, sensors, devices and services. On the contrary, the roles of end-users are overlooked and neglected. In particular, many applications and systems do not allow user intervention and participation, so that a user only can use a set of pre-defined content based on pre-defined conditions. However, a user needs to directly intervene with applications and systems when it does not work properly, and participate in a service with more expressive powers. In order to support user intervention and participation, first, the user needs to understand the environment, namely what he or she can do in that environment. Second, the user needs to send a command to the environment making a necessary change. Previously, these two tasks were difficult due to lack of a personal user interface on the user side, supports for inter-operable formats and framework. With recent development of mobile computers, especially mobile phones, many works develop mobile user interface to interact with the environment. The research challenge deals with limited computation power and interaction modes of mobile device as well as heterogeneous sensor, device, service and content. In this dissertation we enrich control of end-users by active and voluntary participation. In active participation, end-users receive context-aware services as well as directly intervene to manipulate services in a way they want. In voluntary participation, end-users create a new content that can be used with previous services and shared by other users. Further user-created digital trails are analyzed to learn about users, and used in recommendation services.Consequently, the roles of end-users are strengthened to stay in control of the environment. Moreover, the user interaction history and digital trails are re-used to reinforce the logic behind service in the environment.
